when i attempt to install the client for u20.04 the install script returns an error stating that the client is unsupported.
What version of the DVR are you using? I have mine installed on Ubuntu 20.04 and my Bluecherry software is 3.1.0-rc2, and my Linux and Windows client talks to the server and works. I see this post is from Dec. 2020. I imaging you have updated to much newer and things are working for you now.
