When you use continuous + motion recording, are the number of recording files duplicated?
For example, say motion is detected 100% of the time and continuous motion is also running. Are there two sets of files created on the storage location?
Yes, there will be two files saved at the same time

I originally thought the motion detection + continuous motion added “tags” at times on the continuous timeline to denote motion detection?
